Entry Requirements

  • Entry to year 1, HNC, is BHS Stage II or equivalent, such as Pony Club B Test or NC Equestrian Skills and Business Studies 
  • Applicants with other academic and work experience are welcome, entry will be assessed on the basis of your accumulated previous experience 
  • Entry to year 2, HND, is the HNC Equine Studies 
  • Entry to year 3, BA, is the HND Equine Studies

Curriculum

First Year

HNC Equine Studies

Mandatory units are:

  • Equine studies: equine anatomy and physiology 
  • Equine studies: graded unit 1 
  • Equine studies: equine fitness
  • Equine studies: equine health 
  • Equine studies: equine nutrition 
  • Equine studies: equine selection 
  • Equine facility management 
  • Preparation of horses for competitions 

Option units include:

  • Customer care 
  • Work experience 
  • Equine studies: equine youngstock 
  • Equine studies: equitation for the leisure industry 
  • Equine studies: equitation instructional techniques 
  • Equine studies: the brood mare 
  • Equine studies: the stallion 
  • Driving the single turnout* 

*Note: this option is intended to be delivered on a 3 yearly rotation to Riding for the Disabled Driving Groups

Second Year

HND Equine Studies

Mandatory units are:

  • Equine studies: graded unit 2 
  • Equine studies: equine grassland management
  • Managing an event 
  • Marketing: an introduction 

Option units may include:

  • Equine studies: planning equine facilities 
  • Equine studies: progressive training programmes for the young horse 
  • Equine studies: riding techniques on the flat
Third Year
